SUMMARY:Stand With Adrin Court Date
DESCRIPTION:We will again come together to show Adrin he has the community behind him. \nToo many young black people are chewed up and spit out by the justice system\, and we need to show Kingston Police that we stand with Adrin\, and demand that his charges are dropped. \n#StandWithAdrin #NoJusticeNoPeace \n—-\nMore Info: \nOn July 20th 24 year old Adrin Broadhead was walking home from work when police stopped him to question where he was going\, and where he had been. They asked him what was in his hand\, and he was holding a beer. \n3 – 4 cop cars arrived and because he had no identification on him\, the officers kept asking him to repeat his name. \nA cop came up behind him and tried to put his hands behind his back – before he knew it he was face down on the ground. \nWhile on the ground – curled up in a fetal position\, he was pepper sprayed and tased by officers of the Kingston Police Department. \nHe is bruised\, scratched and swollen. \nHis charges were: Littering\, Open Container and Resisting Arrest.

SUMMARY:Save Our Schools Rally & Doorknocking
DESCRIPTION:This weekend – our outreach is all about Education! Our congressman\, John Faso has an opportunity to fight for a budget that invests in our schools\, instead of cutting from schools. \nJoin us for a rally\, and then knock on doors in Kingston or make calls all over CD19 to ask people to call John Faso and say – “Save our schools\, don’t vote for a budget that cuts education funding” \nJoining in with a National Day of Action earlier in the week\, parents\, students and allies will come together demand more funding for public education and to denounce the Trump/DeVos agenda of devastating budget cuts\, and failed privatization schemes like unaccountable voucher expansion programs and non-transparent and for-profit charter schools.

SUMMARY:Rally to Defend DACA
DESCRIPTION:Join us at a rally to defend DACA & demand that Congressman Faso step up and fight for his constituents! Tuesday\, September 5 at noon\, 721 Broadway\, Kingston. \nCongressman Faso has said he supports legislation that would help young people with DACA remain permanently in the United States but we don’t need words\, we need action! Join us to demand that Congressman Faso push his party leaders to pass legislation now that will provide a permanent solution for young people\, with no strings attached. \nCo-Sponsors: New York Immigration Coalition\, Ulster Immigrant Defense Network\, Worker Justice Center of New York\, Community Voices Heard\, Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson\, Adelante Student Voices\, Grace Latino Outreach\, Rockland Immigration Coalition\, Citizen Action NY – Hudson Valley\, Jewish Voices for Peace – Hudson Valley\, Holy Cross/Santa Cruz Episcopal Church\, Peace is Not Silence (Kingston)\, WESPAC\, (list in formation) \nBACKGROUND: For five years\, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals\, or DACA\, program has provided nearly 1 million young people\, including 50k New Yorkers\, protection from deportation\, the opportunity for higher education and jobs\, and brought stability to our communities. But now DACA is at risk. We have heard the Trump administration might come out with a decision this week or early next and we must be ready! Last month\, 10 anti-immigrant Attorneys General issued an ultimatum to the Trump Administration: either end the DACA program by September 5 or we’ll take you to court. So far\, Trump has not responded. But we must be ready for whatever happens. The NYIC is calling on all of our members\, allies and partners to be prepared to step up to protect DACA and New York’s DREAMers. \nMultiple legislative solutions have been proposed in Congress but Speaker Ryan has not prioritized this urgent issue. We demand that congress pass a permanent legislative solution for DACA\, that includes a path to citizenship\, and has not strings attached! We need to make sure that our NY representatives knows that the people of New York are calling on them to #DefendDACA and all 11 million undocumented immigrants. NYIC is working together with our members and partners in the Hudson Valley\, Central NY\, and NYC to plan public responses to pressure our representatives to take action NOW.

SUMMARY:Health Care is a Human Right Base Building Canvassing Training
DESCRIPTION:Winning universal health care will require a broad and diverse movement of New Yorkers coming together to demand health care as a human right. How do we build a movement that can win? \nOne-on-one conversations are a critical organizing practice that engages people in real dialogue and invites them to join our collective work. The Campaign for New York Health is preparing teams of volunteer organizers to have one-on-one conversations and collect health care stories in communities across New York. \nAt this training\, we will go over the tools that can help us fight back\, to win the right to health care — and so much more — by organizing in our communities. \nThe first part of the training will review concepts important to organizing and an introduction to the powerful outreach tools the statewide Campaign for NY Health is using. \nFor the second half of the training\, we will hit the streets to practice! \nAfter completing this training\, participants will:\n– Have a basic understanding of the following concepts: base-building\, organizing\, and why one on one conversations and listening are critical step to movement building.\n– feel comfortable using the Health Care Access Survey to have one-on-one healthcare conversations\n– Be ready to lead a canvassing group using the Base Building survey tools! \nThe New York Health Act\, the bill to guarantee health care to all New Yorkers\, passed the NY State Assembly for the third consecutive year in 2017. In 2018\, we plan to #PassNYHealth in the State Senate. Join the fight! \nPlease RSVP at http://www.nyhcampaign.org/hvtraining_20170826
