Civics Class with Zephyr Teachout and Jennifer Schwartz Berky – Session 4

The Good Work Institute is honored to be hosting a four-session civics class with Zephyr Teachout and Jennifer Schwartz Berky. Taking place in Kingston, NY this June, this course explores the foundational philosophy of American democracy, unearths New York’s storied political history, and teaches all participants the fundamentals of working with, protesting against, and/or participating in local government.

Program Purpose:
To gain a foundational understanding of how local government is formed and operates, in a way that explores philosophical concepts and historical context, so that participants are informed and engaged to take direct civic action.
What we will explore:

  • Philosophy of American democracy
  • Local historical context and case studies
  • Fundamentals of how local and state government operates
  • How to effectively engage for change

Weekly readings and civic engagement actions will be assigned in addition to the evening classes. Light refreshments will be provided.

Teacher Bios:
Zephyr Teachout is an anticorruption activist, historian, teacher, and former candidate for Governor and Congress. She is the author of Corruption in America and lives in Clinton, New York.

Jennifer Schwartz Berky is a county legislator, urban planner, historic preservationist and community activist who serves as a trustee and advisor for many communities and organizations in the Hudson Valley. She lives in Kingston, NY.
